It may seem a bit daunting but an apple or pear espalier is a fun way to incorporate fruit into your landscape and it’s not that difficult. Step one is to select a location that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. (I’ve got one group along an east facing wall and they are thriving). A fence or wall are good locations to start, or simply build your own trellising system. The ultimate height is up to you, I have some that are only one layer high, I’ve seen pears done to 8 or 9 tiers on a large wall. We used rebar in this example but clothesline material is excellent too since it won’t chafe the tender bark.
