Most people think a community has to be big. It does not. That is where the confusion starts. A community is not a society. It is not everyone. It is not about numbers. A community is a group of people who: recognize each other, share something in common, and choose to stay connected around it. That means you already belong to multiple communities: your friends, your work, your interests, your spaces. The problem is not that people do not have communities. It is that they do not always recognize them. And not everyone needs to go and build a new community. But everyone can contribute to the ones they are already part of. You can respond. You can connect people. You can encourage participation. You can help a space feel more human. Imagine if more people did that consistently. Communities would not feel empty. They would feel alive. How do we support our community during a crisis? Let’s get Smarter in Seconds! A community is any collection of people who support or care for one another and may share geography, identity, or experiences. You might not know or look like everyone in your community, but if you’re alive, you’re probably part of one! Helping after a crisis can take countless forms. Think about what you do best or what you enjoy doing and how you can apply that to supporting your community. Do you love to cook? Cook and deliver meals or join a meal distribution service. Do you love to read? Offer to host a storytime or join a book drive. Donations are also a vital part of community support - but remember a crisis is not the time to clear your closet or pantry of trash that’s been gathering dust. Think locally, too. Supporting disasters in another state or country is an IMPORTANT and beautiful thing to do, but remember to also think about what’s happening in your own neighborhood.
