We were taught that community is about gathering, fun, and proximity. Who you see. What you do. How often you meet. But that model hits a limit. What I’m noticing now is a hunger for depth. Not more events, but more truth. Spaces where nothing needs to be fixed, witnessed instead. Where people can soften together without performing or holding it all together. I recently experienced this in a collective healing space with close friends, and the shift was clear: when we allow ourselves to feel together, something ancient activates. Defenses drop. Belonging becomes real. Fun still matters because joy opens the heart. But depth builds resilience. And service matures connection. The next era of community isn’t just where we play. It’s where we heal, grow, and give back.

How to find community & networking events in your city, as someone who has lived alone in NYC for 2 years + Founded a career community group in the process! Here are the steps I took and recommend taking: 1. Find your goal and interests. What do you want from a community or attending events? 2. Look up those keywords on Google, social. You’ll start to see some themes. 3. Follow accounts and newsletters! For the latest event updates 4. Go to an event. Make it a regular part of your routine (ie once a week, month) 5. Dress confidently and don’t be shy! Strike up conversation. Be open and curious. 6. You’ll start seeing the same people at these events… and they’ll introduce you to more events and communities you may never have heard of. ♡ Want to build community? Start with community care, collective wellbeing and practicing mutual aid. ♡ + spread the word. There’s a lot of dialogue circulating online about ‘getting involved’, but where can you start? As a sustainability advocate, I believe we have three homes - ourselves, our communities and the planet and true sustainability comes from honoring those three things. Community can be defined however you want - it can be your family, friend group, co-workers, the people you take classes with, the people you go to meetings or events with - or a combination of all of those things. Community can be intimate and it can also be expansive and include a network of people with shared values, an entire organization or even a movement. It can even be online sometimes and all those things are valid. But go where you feel seen, heard and validated. A vibrant, supportive and healthy community takes cultivation and intention. So caring for your community means investing in collective wellbeing and figuring out your role. It can even be as simple as sharing space with someone, letting someone tell you what’s on their heart and mind, or even posting a resource on your IG story. I’ve recently started hosting more gatherings, hang outs and spaces at my home because I love hosting, so I’m channeling that energy for community care because as the world continues to change rapidly before my eyes - I’m craving friendship and community more than ever. I’m also hosting more public events for people outside of my close friend’s circle. So find a local organization you can support, call your friends and family, connect with your elders, build intergeneration dialogue, be a safe space for others and get involved in a way that feels authentic to you and know there’s no perfect place to start.
