It’s time to empty one of the plastic compost bins 🪱 This is by no means the best compost I’ve made, but it’s also not as terrible as I was prepared for - what led this one to being less than perfect is a couple of things… 1) We didn’t rotate it or add accelerator or water as I have a few bins on the go so for ✨science✨ I deliberately just ignored this one to see what would happen as an experiment and 2) this was also the bin that got a LOT of grass cuttings added to it in one go which threw it off balance - the best compost is one with lots of different types of materials and frequent aeration 🌱 It’s still healthy stuff though as there were plenty of earthworms at the bottom 🪱 I could put this stuff back in the composter to let it breakdown further but I decided to set up some new raised beds, so I’m using the chunky stuff as the base layer for a Hugelkultur bed and then sieving the finer stuff for a top layer - this way the chunky stuff will continue to breakdown over time, but in the beds, and it fills up the raised bed nicely, ready to plant into 🌱 Oh, and that thing that looks like a potato at the top? My compost bins are one of the most asked-about things on our homestead! This is probably the most complicated design that you could go for when it comes to compost bins, but they work SUPER well! I love that the slatted design in front keeps the pile neat while allowing for good airflow. Plus, it’s easy to pull the finished compost out by removing all of the front boards. What you’ll need: -4 4x4 posts that are 8’ long (bury in the ground 2’) -16 5/4th decking boards that are 8’ long (chop all of them in half) -2 2x4 boards that are 8’ long (cut one in half to use as the top brace, then chop the rest into the angled bracings to hold the front slat boards The most challenging part is deciding what type of wood you want to use for this project. We built these compost bins close to 10 years ago (before I knew any better), so this is all built using pressure-treated wood. Thankfully, arsenic hasn’t been used in pressure-treated wood since 2003 and the most common chemical used today is alkaline copper quat (ACQ). While this is a less toxic option than arsenic, it’s still not great. The alternative to pressure-treated wood is naturally rot-resistant cedar, however, it is incredibly expensive... If I had to do it all over again, I’d probably still choose pressure-treated wood for the 4x4 posts, then use cedar for the rest.
