Soil health is very important! It is gold! I’m sure you know that by now. A good quality soil can cost a lot so I’ve been making it a habit to compost. It took me a year to learn the tricks of composting but I know that’s the only way to learn - to get started, assess and make changes as needed. I wouldn’t have learned anything if I quit right away. I still don’t have my dream composter but I still compost because I should. These trash bins have served me well and so does that broken mop wand. It’s not the prettiest setup nor the most efficient but it works. Homemade compost always brings out the worms like nothing else. It brings such delight when we find these fellas! Worms loosen the soil and also aerate it and assist with soil drainage. They are such an important microorganism for our cycle towards sustainable planting. They break down and recycle organic matter like nothing else. Research from the University of Sydney has tried to quantify the effect of healthy soil with rich organic content. They found that increasing the organic carbon content of a soil from 1 per cent up to 4 per cent increases the water holding capacity of a square meter of soil from 14.4 litres up to an amazing 57.6 litres, and that is just in the first 30 centimetres of soil!
