In 2011, with a computer science degree but no job offers. he decided to build a simple clone of his favorite childhood game, Harvest Moon, just to improve his resume. But that small project became a four-and-a-half-year solo obsession. He worked 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, from his bedroom. He created every single piece of art, music, dialogue, and code by himself. He worked part-time as a movie theater usher to pay the bills while his girlfriend supported them both. In the final weeks, after years of isolation, he was so sick of the game he thought it was bad. He was terrified he had wasted his life. When he finally released Stardew Valley in 2016, it exploded. It has now sold over 30 million copies and is one of the most beloved indie games of all time. He didn’t just add a line to his resume; he built a universe that is loved by millions. In his own words: “I did always have a ridiculous amount of faith in myself and in the game... and yet I knew that I was still a nobody and the only way I could change that was to work super hard.
