If you’ve tried to use Copilot, or even build an agent in Copilot, and the results are absolute crap, I mean bottom of the barrel, makes you want to cry, genuinely useless, then I have a secret for you. Do not build Copilot agents in the general Copilot chat window. It will tempt you. It will look like you can. It will even act like you can. Then it will give you an agent that behaves like it has had a mild head injury and a short attention span. If you want an agent that actually works, you need to build it in Microsoft Copilot Studio. Now, if you’re not technically minded, Copilot Studio can feel confronting at first glance. You open it and suddenly there are boxes, fields, settings, and toggles everywhere, and it is not immediately obvious what matters, what can be ignored, and what will completely break the agent if you get it wrong. This is where the fun part begins, because you do not have to figure it out alone. My favourite move is using Claude to guide me through Copilot Studio step by step. I tell Claude exactly what I want the agent to do, and I get it to design the instructions, the conversation flow, and the setup process in plain English so I can follow it like a recipe. Here is the prompt I use. Copy it and customise the XYZ part. “You are one of the world’s best Microsoft Copilot Studio developers. You have a client who wants to build an agent that does [XYZ]. Build the agent design for me, including the full custom instructions, the ideal conversation flow, and step-by-step directions to set it up in Microsoft Copilot Studio for optimal results. If anything is unclear, ask me qualifying questions one by one until you are confident you can deliver the best possible build.” Then you sit back and let one AI show you how to maximise another AI, which is both hilarious and wildly effective. I started my career as a Software Engineer at Microsoft, working on a PaaS product on Azure. Solid engineering work, but I always knew I wanted to move closer to AI. When I transitioned into working on an AI-agent based product in Copilot Studio, it wasn’t overnight or accidental. I went back to the basics! Revised Python and ML fundamentals… then steadily built depth in GenAI: prompt engineering, embeddings, RAG, vector stores, and hands-on integrations with different LLMs. I explored agent frameworks like LangChain and Semantic Kernel, and experimented with SmolAgents, CrewAI, and Bot Framework to understand different agent architectures and patterns. Alongside this, I built small real-world projects like chatbots, retrieval systems, and automations… to see how these systems actually behave beyond demos. I also focused on production-ready thinking: logging, monitoring, prompt versioning, and Responsible AI, because agents don’t live in notebooks… they run in real systems. What made the transition effective wasn’t starting from scratch, but mapping my SWE experience to AI impact… using agents to automate workflows, improve search, reduce manual effort, and scale decision-making. This isn’t a story about cracking interviews or having a PhD in AI. It’s about being consistent, practical, and curious while already being a software engineer.
