Did you know IBCLC is the highest credential in feeding support? IBCLC is a separate credential to any other healthcare qualification, some healthcare professionals like Midwives, Health Visitors or GPs will have also undertaken and achieved the credential. (You can always ask if you’re not sure who’s supporting you with feeding!) IBCLC stands alone in its own right as a qualification, and can also be achieved by those from a non-healthcare background, although candidates need to complete a strict criteria of eligibility before applying to sit the exam. Before they become parents, many people are surprised that Lactation Consultants even exist! However you choose to feed your baby it can come with challenges which require specialist feeding support, input and advice. In the UK, some NHS trusts employ IBCLCs so you may see one as part of your antenatal/postnatal experience…many of us also work privately with own practices. This is what happens when institutions prioritize credentialism over actual knowledge. Universities used to teach students how to think. Now they teach them how to sound educated while saying nothing. Master the right tone, deploy the approved vocabulary, and you can graduate without ever engaging with a challenging idea. Not only are study claims exaggerated, there are always multiple confounding variables (statistical power, sampling bias, etc.) Even “systematic reviews” are only as powerful as the studies within them. The majority of the studies in the fitness industries have these issues. A big one is study length. In today’s entitled “show me the study” world, it’s easy to underestimate how much a responsible study would cost, which is a huge limiting factor to executing one well. Even outside of that, studies rarely “prove” anything. This is why you see at the end of practically every study “more research is needed to determine such and such and so and so”. Although research has its place, first principles and observing reality critically is a more effective lens to getting significant results. The deadlift is flawed and should be shelved indefinitely, we don’t have to wait for the science. There is a difference between getting results in real time, and citing poorly executed studies that provide little to no practical information to clinical reality. I’ll leave it to you to decide where Functional Patterns stands.
