Paul Schrader tells the story of how he, Martin Scorsese, and Robert De Niro were approached about making a sequel to Taxi Driver. It was De Niro who kept pushing the idea, convinced there was more story to tell about Travis Bickle. Schrader did eventually attempt to write a treatment, but gave up after realizing "it just didn't seem to work." Interestingly, the sequel wasn't the only bizarre Taxi Driver continuation that was attempted. In 2005, a Grand Theft Auto-style video game was nearly completed, but Scorsese stepped in with a threat to Sony: if they released the game, he'd make sure Sony never licensed another movie again. The game was about 75% complete with $1.5 million already invested when it was killed. Some stories refuse to be extended, no matter how much money is on the table. #PaulSchrader #TaxiDriver #MartinScorsese #RobertDeNiro #FilmHistory #DirectorInterview #Screenwriting #HollywoodLegends #BehindTheScenes #FilmLegends #CinemaHistory #IconicFilms #70sCinema #FilmTrivia #FilmCommunity #Cinephile #DirectorPerspective #ClassicFilmmaking #FilmDiscussion #ScreenwritingStories

50 years of TAXI DRIVER. Taxi Driver was actually born out of a total breaking point for both the writer and the director. Paul Schrader wrote the script while he was in the absolute worst phase of his life—he was broke, his marriage had ended, and he was living out of his car with a literal loaded gun in the glove box. He was so isolated and depressed that he basically wrote the movie as a way to keep from losing his mind. Then, when it came time to edit, the studio executives started pushing Martin Scorsese to cut the violence down to get a better rating. Scorsese was so protective of the film and so stressed that he reportedly had a complete meltdown, telling people he was going to go after the executive personally if they forced him to change his vision. It’s wild to think one of the greatest movies ever made only exists because these two guys were pushed to the absolute edge. #martinscorsese #robertdeniro #paulschrader #rajinikanth #anirudh

Quentin Tarantino worked on the script for almost a decade. Roughly only thirty percent of the film is spoken in English. French or German dominate, with a little Italian. This is highly unusual for a Hollywood production. This is the first Quentin Tarantino film to win an Oscar for acting: Christoph Waltz for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Waltz won another Oscar for Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012) while his Inglorious Basterds costar Brad Pitt would go on to win his first acting Oscar at the end of the decade for Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Paul Schrader ended up writing Taxi Driver, mainly due to his own upheaval in his life at the time . “When I first was writing the script I thought it was about loneliness. What I learned while writing the script is that this was about a man who suffered from the pathology of loneliness. He wasn’t lonely by nature, he was lonely as a defense mechanism. And he reinforced his own loneliness by his own behavior. And the pathology grew until it became malignant and violent.” Scorsese has said, "When Taxi Driver came by, I realized I had to choose between whether I was going to make Hollywood type pictures or more personal movies. And that's what I felt that I should do it because I had to keep on trying to make as many personal pictures as possible within the system, within the Hollywood system because it doesn't matter where you live in America. If you make a film in New York or Chicago or whatever, it's still a Hollywood film. I felt that's the kind of film I should be making because it had an honesty to it and a truthfulness about it." Taxi Driver was released February 8, 1976 and received critical acclaim, while also courting controversy for its violence. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and got four Oscar nominations, including being nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor for Robert De Niro. It has since gone on to being regarded as a landmark film of 1970s cinema. Scorsese has said about the making of the film, "Interesting to note, I think that it was a film that we didn't think was going to be seen by anybody. We just had to make it. We didn't think it was going to be successful financially and it was and we didn't think it was going to be recognized critically and it was."
