Between 3-5pm Masala Zone serves up a Masala High Chai afternoon tea which brings fire and spice to the traditional teatime and draws inspiration from several Indian regions. I personally found some of the sweet treats a little too sweet for my palette but enjoyed many of the savoury bites. The freshly brewed Indian masala chai which they constantly top up from colourful, hand-painted Indian teapots was lovely. Masala Zone in Picadilly’s Criterion is well worth a visit. It’s part of an iconic London restaurant group and the very first Indian restaurant chain in the UK. I had my graduation dinner at the OG on Marshall Street and was at their launch party in 2001. Thrilled to see the standards haven’t slipped, and the team is as warm as ever. They have a special Diwali menu until 10th November featuring Kolkata fish chops, Bengali meat curry, which were both very good. The Jalebi chaat was sensational and so clever, mixing sweet, sour, spicy and heavenly textures. Special mention also of the tandoori chicken chops in a butter garlic sauce that we wiped clean with the cheese naan and mint laccha paratha. The Diwali dessert platter was fabulous and the kids loved their raspberry and pistachio kulfi. The Diwali specials also feature on their Thali selection but if you can’t make it on time, please do check it out another time and report back. It’s not a cheap eat, but feels very grand and excellent value for the setting and selection. We had a complementary meal for my son’s 14th Birthday and all loved it.
