Crossroads (1986): Eugene Martone vs Jack Butler This guitar duel featured in the movie was originally intended to be a slide-guitar blues contest with Ry Cooder contracted to play Steve Vai’s parts. However, director Walter Hill decided to replace Cooder with guitarists like Keith Richards, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Ray Vaughan in an effort to produce a harder “boxing match” style battle. The reason he chose Steve Vai was because he hoped that the fashionable shred guitar style would increase the film’s appeal to a wider audience. There was also an additional duel filmed, which pitted Steve Vai’s character against Shuggle Otis, who was going to lose this to establish how brutal Vai’s character is.
