Here’s what the science says about how much each scan increases your personal lifetime cancer risk: • Abdominal & Pelvic CT – adds about 0.05% • Chest CT – adds about 0.025% • Head CT – about 0.012% • Chest X-ray – 0.0003% • Extremity X-ray – basically zero MRI and ultrasound? No radiation. No added cancer risk. Not saying CTs are bad—they save lives when used appropriately. But when we order them out of habit, anxiety, or convenience, we expose patients to risks that aren’t always necessary. Bottom line: Just because it’s common, doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Imagine having a scan that can see what’s wrong with you directly at a cellular level! Hierarchical Phase-Contrast Tomography (HiP-CT) is an X-ray technique that might just be the answer! It decouples field of view and resolution to image anywhere in the human body with cellular (micron) resolution. Imaging areas can be full organs at a resolution of 25 micron or zoomed regions in these organs with resolutions between 6 and 0.6 micron, one hundred times the resolution of medical CT. Using a particle accelerator, the Human Organ Atlas is producing these 3D scans from HiP-CT of our organs in unprecedented detail. You can look through different layers of tissue and even zoom in on the cells for the heart, lungs, eyes, kidneys, and more. Please note that this imaging modality is only for research purposes and only on cadavers because of the high radiation dose but they are working on protocols to reduce it and make it clinically available. Typical hospital head CT brain absorbed dose: • ~30 to 60 mGy So the HiP-CT donor brain received: 🧠Whole brain average: ~3 to 8x a clinical head CT. 🧠Zoomed local areas: 50 to 500x+ Bottom line: 🧠Whole-organ pass: ~0.2 Gy 🧠Regional detail scans: ~2 Gy 🧠Micron zoom ROls: ~10 Gy or higher locally Media Credit: Claire L.
