CLI testing has always been awkward. Shell scripts that rewrite on every UI change. `expect` scripts with fragile pattern matching. Ad-hoc fixtures that grow stale in a week. So I replaced all of it with a closed loop. An agent spawns a tmux session, starts my CLI, types inputs, reads stdout, and diffs against expected behavior. Four panes, one loop. When something breaks, the agent reproduces the exact sequence, writes a regression test for that failure, appends it to the suite, and commits. I never type `pytest` myself. The honest limit: the agent still needs a clear oracle. “What’s correct” has to come from me. If I can’t describe the expected behavior, I get a flaky loop instead of a flaky test. This makes adding tests cheap. It does not make knowing what’s right cheap. The payoff is permanence. Every bug I ever see gets frozen into a test before I close the terminal. The CLI literally patches itself against its own history. Spawn. Diff. Commit. If you’re shipping a developer tool with a terminal interface, this is the testing setup you’ll want in six months.
