What an amazing group of young men and women! We had 30 kids and parents visit the museum on Sunday. They are all local scouts and had fantastic questions about artifacts and history! Well done parents and troop leaders!! We would love to have them all back again soon. #boyscoutsofamerica #scouting #durham #teaching #local

On February 8, 1910, in Washington, D.C., a quiet yet significant event took place as a group of men incorporated the Boy Scouts of America. This movement traces its roots back to an Englishman, Robert Baden-Powell, who authored "Scouting for Boys" in 1908, a book that taught survival skills, knot tying, first aid, and character development through outdoor adventures. The spark came to America when publisher William Boyce, lost in the London fog, was helped by a Scout. Inspired, Boyce brought the scouting concept to the U.S. Without much fanfare, it all began with paperwork filed in the nation's capital. Soon, troops cropped up nationwide, instilling values of camping, citizenship, and loyalty in boys sporting khaki uniforms and striving to earn merit badges. During World War I, these Scouts contributed by selling war bonds. From a single incorporation and an idea that crossed the ocean, millions of boys grew up shaped by its values, taking the journey from a foggy London street to forming troops in towns across the nation. The Boy Scouts of America started its impactful journey right here, shaping young lives across generations.
