It’s easy to feel like we’re drowning in data- and still not have the information we actually need. A lot of organizations assume data is this magical resource that already exists somewhere, waiting to deliver answers. But most of the time, what we have is data that was passively collected… not data designed to answer the questions leaders are actually asking. That’s why leaders sometimes ask their data teams for answers and hear: we can’t answer that. The solution isn’t more dashboards. It’s slowing down and getting strategic. When leaders take the time to clarify the questions that truly matter- and plan intentionally around what data needs to be collected to answer them- that’s when data becomes genuinely useful. I know this feeling well. Early in my career, I experienced the same overwhelm of trying to make sense of endless reports that didn’t actually help with decisions. That’s why I care so much about helping leaders get clear on how to work with data in ways that actually support their mission and their communities.
