1️⃣Your beginning is probably too slow. You don’t need three chapters of backstory and world-building before anything happens. Start where the story actually starts, then weave in the context as you go. 2️⃣Your story is going to change. The first version of your book will evolve over and over again, so don’t stress about getting your outline perfect. It doesn’t need to be set in stone because if you don’t change it yourself, there’s a good chance your developmental editor will make you anyway. 3️⃣Your first draft will be full of clichés. It’s inevitable. When we’re problem-solving in the moment, our brains automatically reach for the most obvious solutions…the same ones your readers will see coming from a mile away. One of the best ways to level up your writing is to ask yourself: “What if I flipped this idea completely and did the exact opposite?” 4️⃣No matter how polished you think your manuscript is, it’s not ready yet. You need an editor. I’ve thought mine was “market-ready” multiple times. I’ve hired editors asking for just a “light pass,” only to receive thousands of edits back. And every single time, my future self thought, “Thank GOODNESS I didn’t publish that version. How did I ever think it was ready?” 5️⃣Your dialogue probably sounds like a screenplay, not real conversation. People don’t speak in perfectly structured sentences. They interrupt, trail off, use contractions, say “um” and “like,” and rarely answer questions directly. If your characters are taking turns delivering complete thoughts, it’s going to feel stiff. 6️⃣You’re probably over-explaining everything. Trust your readers. You don’t need to tell us the character is sad after showing them crying. You don’t need to explain why the dark alley is dangerous. Your readers are smart. Let them do some of the work. 7️⃣Your main character might be too passive. If things just “happen” to your protagonist and they’re constantly reacting instead of driving the action, readers will lose interest. Your MC needs to make choices (even bad ones) that push the story forward. #debutauthors #indieauthorsofig
