No, it’s not manipulation. Opening up is the start of real connection! What I’m using here is a combo of two well-documented techniques: Self-image elevation – people are more open when you affirm their identity first. Advice-seeking – studies show asking for advice (vs. help) leads people to reflect on their own experiences, often triggering personal stories. This taps into what’s known as “self-perception theory” and identity priming, when people see themselves as wise or resilient, they unconsciously act in line with that image. Open floor plans can be great — until every activity starts to happen in the same space. One design tool we often use to solve this is: glass or translucent partitions. They allow you to define different zones in a home without sacrificing natural light or openness. Glass doors, Crittall-style partitions, shoji screens, or reeded panels can create separation between spaces like a living room and home office while still keeping everything visually connected. They also allow rooms to borrow light from one another, making darker areas feel brighter and more open. And because you can see through multiple layers of space, the home gains depth and dimension instead of feeling like one large room. It’s a simple way to create privacy and purpose — without turning your home into a series of dark boxes.
