A skull deformation is caused by excessive mechanical constraints on the skull during a traumatic birth (forceps/vacuum primarily, emergency c-section with long engagement, long exposure to low amniotic fluid, short/long labour, pressure on the stomach by nurse or stopping baby from coming out, etc..) and planned c-section as the occiput in many cases in folded and when fully underneath the parietal bones, there is a higher risk of flattening. A weakness of the lumbar spine/reflex (and usually the thoracic spine/reflex) is also necessary as it will cause a collapse of the tension through the meninges thus a weakness of the curves leading to unilateral tensions on the spine pulling on the skull (additional to preexisting tensions coming from an injury like the ones found with forceps/vacuum) facilitating the rotation to one side, which will overtime facilitate the vicious cycle of deformation with more pressure on one side. I personally rarely use helmets since we can remodel the skull through Osteopathy and the right advices.
