The “V-sign” is a term we use to describe this deformity which implies instability of the metatarsophalangeal joint complex, likely secondary to chronic trauma, aging process,change in foot mechanics, or systemic or collagen disorders. X-rays are used to look at overall alignment, as well as length of metatarsals and MRI is used to evaluate the integrity of the plantar plate, which is a structure that keeps the joint in alignment. Shoe modification and different types of taping of the toes can be used to manage symptoms. surgery might include plantar plate repair, which involves a metatarsal osteotomy and/or soft tissue realignment. Metatarsus Adductus is a common foot deformity seen at birth (more common in firstborn children), where the front half of the foot curves inward 🐦 Most cases, especially mild and flexible deformities, improve on their own without treatment by age 1 to 4 years (85–89%) 👧🏼 I’ve seen two adults with this foot condition, and my first thought was: how aren’t your feet looking worse? 😅 Like, even «normal» feet can get messed up and weak from today’s shoes (and these feet are turning far more inward than mine..). General info for the detail lovers: 🤔 The cause The exact cause isn’t fully known, but it’s often linked to the baby’s position in the womb or family history. 🔗 Linked problems - In-toeing gait = affects the knees, hips and pelvis. - Increased medial tib. torsion = cause discomfort or instability. - Secondary conditions, like bunions, hammertoes or stress fractures. - Balance and safety. - Poor shock absorption = abnormal stress on the lower limb joints. - Higher risk of hip dysplasia/hip instability. 🩹Common treatments - Stretching exercises (some note that if not done correctly it can be harmful) - Casting (between 6 months and 1 year). - Modified shoes or braces. - Surgery (rarely, 1–2 %) Experts are also giving advise on footwear, such as avoiding rigid or unsupportive shoes 👟 I would def try a wider barefoot shoe model or a custom-made shoe, if I had MA myself 🦶🏼 This for both getting enough width and to increase strength and balance. 💪🏽 MA and strength It’s not great studies and cases when it comes to MA and strength training for the feet and hips.. as I’ve seen. BUT, the related problems really highlight just how crucial it is to pay attention to your feet, hips and gait. Exercises that strengthen intrinsic foot muscles and improve foot arch support have been shown to reduce pain in other forefoot conditions by decreasing pressure on metatarsal joints. ⚠️ If the foot is stiff or flexible matters when balancing strength and mobility in MA cases!
