Yes, derby looks a bit chaotic, but here's what to look for: Jammer: has a star on their helmet. They are the one who can score points. Blockers: they are the other players trying to stop the Jammer from making it through the pack (aka the rest of the skaters), because the Jammer scores a point for each blocker they pass. There's one other player type that's out on the track (the Pivot) and I'll explain that role in the next Derby 101 video. Here’s how to improve your score! 🌟 ❌ 5 common mistakes judges look for in your test: 📍Firstly, make sure to save this reel so that you can come back to it before your next competition! Now, let’s dig into some simple mistakes that can cost you vital marks in your test! ✨ 1️⃣ Riding poor corners: You should always ride deep into the corner, maintaining your horse’s rhythm and balance. This way it gives you more time to prepare for the next movement, whatever that is. Make sure to make this a part of your daily training! 2️⃣ Rider position: “Riders should always aim to keep their upper body level with the shoulders and hips of their horse, so that he or she can stay in an upright mode.” This part often has a coefficient to it with makes it a vital part of your score! 3️⃣ Going to fast: It’s a common misconception between making the horse come forward from behind and the speed. Make sure to focus on the rhythm and the energy coming from the hind leg through the back of the horse. 4️⃣ Playing with the contact: Make sure to have a steady hand with a smooth contact. You shouldn’t have to be playing with the bit to keep your horse in a correct form. If you need to, this is a sign that you need to work on your foundations. 5️⃣ Not preparing for a movement: “One of the things I always look out for is how riders prepare for transitions or turns. At the lower levels, it’s common to see a surprised expression on a horse’s face when the rider suddenly either makes a sharp turn or a ‘trot now/canter now’ aid, rather than the ‘prepare, give an indication to the horse that something might be happening’ (half-halt) and then the aid.” Did you find this helpful?
