The Valley of the Names is a remarkable and unusual landmark in the Sonoran Desert near Winterhaven, California. What makes it special is its vast expanse—over 1,200 acres of desert floor covered with names, dates, messages, and designs spelled out in rock. The tradition likely began during World War II, when soldiers training in the harsh desert landscape of the Desert Training Center—a massive military maneuver area established by General George S. Patton—arranged black lava rocks to spell out their names as a way of leaving a trace of themselves in a place where they prepared for battle. After the war ended, the practice continued and grew, becoming a unique form of personal expression for travelers, off‑roaders, and visitors who ventured into the remote desert. (Atlas Obscura) When Glenda, Linda, Nancy, Ericka, and I hit the road to go out there, the adventure started with a bit of confusion—we got a little lost at first. But that detour led us to a beautiful little chapel, a peaceful place tucked away in the desert where we turned around and retraced our steps. Once the “GPS finally recalculated,” it steered us straight toward the Valley. And wow… it was amazing!! 🌵✨ Seeing all those names and messages spread across the landscape—some old, some new—was fascinating. There’s something touching and timeless about a place where strangers have left their mark across decades, connecting past travelers with present ones. Being there with great friends made it even more memorable. As soon as the snow stopped falling, it started melting into waterfalls 😍 We woke up to 45 mph gusts of wind and blowing snow. While that might sound terrible, we immediately went outside to enjoy it because snow is rare here.
