In DBT, Wise Mind is the integration of Emotion Mind and Reasonable Mind. But, like most dialectical tensions, finding Wise Mind often requires more than just combining two things together. Emotion Mind alone can often include conflicting desires or action urges, with many different emotions. Self-validating and considering all of them is necessary for finding your wisest way forward. (This recognition of the “multiplicity” of minds is also how I think DBT and IFS [Internal Family Systems therapy] can connect successfully. Professor Richard Wolff While crucially important to understand, this clip is a bit of a polemic, so I want to add two important aspects of Mao’s legacy that make it a mixed one. Both problems can be traced to the authoritarian aspect of his rule, not his socialism. -The Great Leap Forward (1958–1962) Mao launched this campaign to rapidly industrialize China and boost agricultural output through collectivization. It led to one of the worst famines in human history, with an estimated tens of millions deaths from starvation and related causes. Unrealistic production targets, false reporting by officials, and the destruction of traditional farming practices all contributed to the catastrophe. -The Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) Mao initiated the Cultural Revolution to reassert his control and purge “counter-revolutionary” elements. It resulted in widespread chaos, persecution, and violence, as millions were humiliated, imprisoned, tortured, or killed. Education systems collapsed, cultural heritage was destroyed, and intellectuals were targeted, leaving deep social and psychological scars that lasted decades. One thing we don’t do in dialectical theory, is think in black and white terms.
