Project Phoebus, launched in 2010 was a massive collaboration between Wikimedia and Toulouse Museum France. Working with local volunteers, the project digitized over 2.5 million objects, including human artefacts, plants and animal specimens. The best part of the collection is the Lepidoptera - thousands of photos of butterflies and moths in incredible quality. After the success of my last video - I had to work with this collection again. This time, instead of zooming in, I zoomed out - using the different specimens as pieces of a grid. As I created 50 pre-compositions (using hundreds of unique images) in after effects and synced them to the music, I started to notice strange patterns emerging. To me, they look like lights blinking on analog synthesizers (I wonder if Radiohead would think the same?). While this was still pretty time consuming, this was a great project to learn AE with, definitely easier than last time. How cool would this be as concert visuals?? Today’s #MBARIFromTheVault video features Humboldt squid! 🦑 These squid are formidable predators, often gathering in large groups for a feeding frenzy when food is plentiful. MBARI research suggests that they communicate with each other as they hunt using changing patterns of light and dark pigment on their skin. ⁠ ⁠ Our Video Lab recently completed a three-year effort to digitize MBARI’s videotape archive, converting 26,500 hours of footage from 31,000 physical tapes into a digital file format. While reviewing the digitized footage for quality control, these spunky squid caught the eye of Research Assistant Giovanna Sainz. “Watching squid interactions is truly fascinating, particularly during their feeding activities. I stumbled upon this captivating scene featuring a school of Humboldt squid in the midst of a feeding frenzy.”⁠

Riddle chose some bright colors to demonstrate how the colors degrade. How does copying a VHS tape work?
