This video always gets designers in a frenzy. The question I hear most is: “Why would you digitize patterns before making samples? Isn’t that risky?” Here’s the truth. Digitizing patterns and size grading are two completely different steps in apparel development. Yes, I recommend digitizing your patterns first. When your patterns are digital, you own a clean version of your intellectual property and can send the files to factories anywhere in the world. What you should not do is grade sizes before your samples are tested. If the sample changes, you’ll have to redo the entire size set. A student from Kerala, India has gone viral after building a machine that uses artificial intelligence and mechanical control to write homework in his own handwriting. The system works by first digitizing the student’s handwriting, analyzing letter shapes, spacing, and pressure patterns. That data is then fed into a custom-built robotic writing arm, which physically holds a pen and recreates the handwriting on paper. A few weeks ago I started scanning and digitizing my late grandfather's photo collection. Starting with his slides from the 1960's and onwards, they show day to day life, important family events, and travels to the south of Europe and Belgium's coast in summer. I received quite a few messages and questions about the equipment I was using so I decided to make this video showing the process.
