How to be demure around a disabled person! 👩🦽➡️♿️ #demure #verymindful #disabledcontent #disabledgirlie #wheelchairuser

First of all, those are my little 💖besties💖 okay? I LOVE my students and clients. Working with them is a JOY! Secondly, I hear the intent behind this comment. It’s nice of people to recognize the hard parts of our jobs and commend us for it. But I think that a lot of the aversion to working in special ed or health care is actually an aversion to disability. Our culture does its best to hide and erase disability. Most of us weren’t brought up in a world that thinks of disabled people as anything more than “tragic” or “inspirational”. Disabled people aren’t often portrayed or talked about with the full scope of their humanity. Yes, disability can be sad. It can be really hard to know that a kid has the deck stacked against them and that all we can do is our best. But most of the time? It’s pretty neutral. They’re literally just kids! They have unique skill sets that require unique support and we’re here to provide that! So no, I’m not a saint for working with disabled kids. Some days I have the best job ever and some days these kids work my last nerve 🫠 but I love it and I wouldn’t trade it for anything 🤍 #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathology #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilityrightsarehumanrights

There are a few things people say to me as a disabled person that I know are meant with good intentions, but they don’t always land that way 🤷🏽♀️♿️ “I don’t see you as being Disabled.” 👀 “You don’t look Disabled.” 🤨 “At least it’s not xyz condition…” 😟 I get that most of the time there’s no bad intention behind them. But comments like these can erase real experiences, question invisible disabilities, or minimise what someone’s actually dealing with. This isn’t about blaming anyone and it’s fine if you’ve said these things before, it’s just about awareness to be more mindful at times! Sometimes what sounds polite on the surface can feel very different on the receiving end, but of course, it’s different for everyone! What would you add to this list and let me know your experiences in the comments! ⬇️💖 Video description: Jennie, a white female wheelchair user, and Robyn, a colleague, talk in a sunlit office kitchen. The camera alternates between each of them as they gesture, react, and engage in conversation, with seating, plants, mugs and a coffee machine visible in the background. #DisabilityAwareness #DisabledVoices #AccessibilityMatters #InclusiveWorkplace #RepresentationMatters

Ahhh the many different hats a Disability Support Worker must wear. I’m telling you, you gotta be able to adapt. This role is something you really need to be on your toes for. One minute you’re assisting cooking, the next you’re explaining what different eras of time are. 😂. I once said something happened in a different era. 30 minutes later I think Zac understood what it meant. ANYWAY, I love the variety. No other job has kept me more mentally engaged. @specialcise_central #downsyndrome #supportworker
