I used to write fictions in my head, alternate realities, as we never expected to have a medically fragile child. But here’s the thing: I can no longer envision my daughter any other way. And we love and accept her just as she is. We always have and will pursue every intervention and quality of life improvement. But she is who she is. And that’s delightful, and worthy, and happier than most people I’ve ever encountered. No one sets out to have a disabled child (although there are some brave people who boldly adopt a child they know has complexities). It’s ok to have a disability.

Friendly reminder that these are 2 very different situations. Being disabled means that you are probably never going to "get better'. This means you probably have to go through the dehumanizing process of applying for PIP. You have to forever live with the hatred the society has for you. Being unable to work or missing a lot of work days due to illness or disability. Fighting for accessible equipment so you can live / work independently. The list goes on! Disabled children become disabled adults. It sounds so simple but it’s a realization as caregiver that hits hard. Every activity we try I am filled with joy and then the grief hits. One day my body won’t be able to transfer him this easily. (Ps it’s actually pretty hard now) Without real access being created in communities it will become harder and harder to leave our house. This is why I raise awareness and share Robbie’s joy. It’s why I ask you to help me spread his smiles and our message. One day our disabled kids will be disabled adults.
