At 19 I was told support wouldn’t make a difference. Now I spend my time explaining why access changes outcomes. Support isn’t a favour. It’s infrastructure. This highlights an important reality in Australia: many people don’t disclose disability or neurodivergence, yet disability is far more common than we think. When hiring processes are rigid and built around one idea of what a “good worker” looks like, barriers are created before people even get a chance. For the 2.2 million disabled Australians wanting to work, these systems can quietly decide they’re “not fit” long before their skills are seen. People with a learning disability want to work. They want to contribute, earn their own money, build confidence and be part of their communities. But too often, the support simply isn’t there to stay and thrive in work. Many people are turned away before they’re even given a chance or feel unwelcome in working environments because they aren't given the reasonable adjustments they need. Access to Work can be a lifeline. It helps fund the practical support and adjustments that make work possible from support workers, to accessible travel to specialist equipment that reduces anxiety and help people do their jobs well.
