Identifying as an illness is something that happens very often when people are dealing with mental health disorders, which is understandable given how all encompassing and ever present the symptoms can be, often impacting several aspects of their lives. In some cases it also helps people find a sense of community with those experiencing something similar but that can be done without identifying as the illness. It is however, extremely important to create that space between yourself and the disorder in order for you to recognise yourself and your life beyond it! There are exceptions, people with neurodivergent conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorders feel a sense of destigmatisation when saying “I am Autistic” as it drives home the point that their brains are fundamentally different biologically. For most mental health disorders, Depression, OCD, Bipolar Disorder - I would recommend identifying with but not identifying as! #mentalhealth #psychiatry #identifywith #distinctions #advice
