Hear me out: taking care of patients requires more than knowledge and skill. You HAVE to learn how to work with people That’s why I’m sharing my tips for building strong relationships with your patients: 1️⃣ Always take your patients’ concerns seriously. Even if a problem isn’t worrisome, never be dismissive. Everyone likes to be heard and validated. 2️⃣ Leave no stone unturned when you’re not sure what’s going on. Patients truly appreciate a physician who goes the extra mile. 3️⃣ Patients hate going home empty-handed. You don’t always have to give them a prescription or an order for tests. Good advice with written instructions is enough. 4️⃣ Anticipate problems. Discussing red flags decreases anxiety and helps patients feel prepared for the worst. 5️⃣ Take care of your patients as though they are part of your family. Invest in getting to know them and give them the same care and attention that you’d want your family members to receive. Who else?! 😂 Slow mornings, no annoying pages, and having flexible in my schedule are things I long for as a busy surgical resident. 😂🙃☕️✨ I absolutely love being a doctor and take great pride in it. But let’s be real, some days are super high stress and being at work 12 hours a day 5 days+ at week gives you limited time to take care of yourself. While it’s tough, I know this difficult training period is temporary. Things get better after residency - this gives me hope. 🙃 To anyone wondering if it’s worth it: YES. If this is what you imagine yourself doing, pursue it! Just know you’re going to have tough days which is all part of the process. Try to find balance when you can. The life of a preventive physician (and cardiologist)! My job is to try and predict the disease before it ever happens. Utilizing new and innovative, lab tests and diagnostic studies, we can very commonly find mild disease before it becomes life-threatening disease. The most rewarding part of my job is not curing a disease (although this is pretty cool), but it is preventing it from ever starting to begin with!
