I have never been prouder of Stella!!! The other day, I was putting laundry away while Max was napping. Max woke up, started crying, and Stella immediately said “Love you come help.” When I got to Max, Stella was standing right in front of him. ❤️ After I picked Max up and calmed him down, Stella went back to her board and said “Help yes.” 🤯🤯🤯 I cannot believe Stella told me to come help and then applauded me when I did. It’s incredible enough that Stella can use words to communicate. But seeing her choose to use this tool to look out for my baby brings an entirely new feeling of awe. Dogs are already such loyal, social animals. Experiences like these make me wonder how much more they could be helping us and expressing their care when they share our language.

Does your dog bark? Try this! 🐶🔇 Teaching quiet is easier than it sounds—but there's a trick to it! Most people shout "quiet" while their dog is barking, but here’s the catch: yelling while they bark actually teaches them that "quiet" means bark with me! 😅 Here’s how to teach “quiet” to mean calm down: 1️⃣ Start Small: Pick a low-key time to practice—no triggers like doorbells or squirrels. Have some treats ready (but out of reach). 2️⃣ Reward Calmness: If your dog barks or jumps, make the treats disappear. When they stop, calmly say “Quiet” and “Sit.” When they sit and focus, reward them with a treat and praise, like “Good dog!” 3️⃣ Practice Everywhere: Repeat this in different areas of your house until they associate “quiet” with calming down, sitting, and looking to you. 4️⃣ Real-World Application: When your dog starts barking in real-time, grab a treat cup to grab their attention. Say “Quiet.” If they don’t sit automatically, guide them with the word “Sit” and reward their calmness with a treat or toy. Teach a bark & quiet command! *Whole session available for subscribers* I’ve never taught this with food until now. I’ve never taught a duration bath in one session. I’ve never also introduced “quiet” in the same season..guys, this was 7 minutes long 🤯 First of all-do NOT expect your dog to get all these things in one session. If they do please tell me! This guy blew me away! I would not say he is 100% solid with these commands by any means. And he needs a lot more duration with “quiet” as well as a lot more proofing. But WOW this was fun. For most dogs, I back-tie them in a harness and choose their favorite toy. If not sure what kind of toy-ask! Most beginners dogs like rubbery or chewy/flappy/fluffy/squeaky things (on a rope). 1) Use prey-like movements to amp the dog, get them excited 2) Randomly stop and hide the toy behind your back while staring at them expectantly. I usually wait about as long as they keep staring or offering other behaviors-then repeat the first step for a bit before freezing again. Do NOT laugh or respond to anything else they offer you. ***some dogs will only offer a snap, or “whisper”-you can start to reward those to shape an actual bark-most dogs are told to NOT bark, so this can be a challenge for many dogs*** 3) Mark the moment they bark and reward them-bring up your energy, let them know they did the right thing! 4) Then start using a command while they bark, then right before they bark 5) Repeat many times before waiting for 2 barks, then 3 and so on 6) Then add a “quiet” command. It’s important to immediately mark and reward the second they are quiet. If you want to teach your dog to remain steady in the Sit-Stay, stop recalling them out of the position. Every once in a while is fine, but if done too often, your dog will start to anticipate it. Coming back to you is associated as a reward (or, at least, it should be). Good stuff happens. At the very least, they get a fuss. Now, you really don’t want them to get this reinforcement and start a pattern forming in their mind. Rehearsed regularly, this becomes a chain of linked behaviours - sit, human walks away, I run back to them, I get attention. Instead, return to your dog and reward them in position. So, the behaviour chain becomes - sit, human walks away, human returns, good happens (fuss/food).
