5 commands to teach your dog today Here’s a breakdown of 5 commands I believe every dog should know — and why they matter. ✅ 1. Sit It sounds obvious, but a solid sit is one of the most useful commands. Sit to greet visitors calmly Sit while waiting in queues Sit before crossing roads Sit as impulse control before food, games, or doorways ✅ 2. Down Everything above applies to “down” too — but it’s even more useful for relaxing. Use it at coffee shops, pub gardens, or parks Helps your dog switch off and chill Builds calmness and stillness ✅ 3. Place / Bed A command to send your dog to their bed or mat. If you want a calm puppy… Take time to teach them to be calm. There is nothing like taking a puppy out, bringing their favorite bone, and sitting at a park bench doing nothing. If you have a super anxious dog, two things to keep in mind. 1, you can satisfy the anxious mind by doing some training first. 2, being calm and doing nothing is a skill that is taught. Do not get frustrated, don’t give commands, just stay calm and be patient. Remember, doing nothing is doing something.
