Welcome behind the scenes of all of my egg boxes! I candle all of my eggs - not to check for embryo development, but for another vitally important reason. I have a process that works well for me, so I figured I’d share it. Is it neurotic? Probably. Do I enjoy it? Absolutely. Here are the steps: 1. Collect all eggs daily. (This is how I know there aren’t any embryos. The eggs have received no incubation. This also allows me to put the exact date the eggs were laid on the carton.) 2. Separate into two groups: Brown/tan/white eggs and Blue/green eggs. This is mostly for personal record-keeping, but also makes arranging the carton gradient (greggient 😏) easier. 3. Weigh each group. Record the number of eggs and weight of the group. I transcribe these numbers into the Flockstar app, which gives me graphs and month:month/year:year comparisons, but I’ve found recording the initial numbers in a notebook is easier and more relaxing. 4. Candle each egg. Specifically, I’m looking for cracks. Sometimes they’re obvious. But the egg at the end of the video (which I found in the prior day’s eggs and set aside for this) looked completely normal in regular light. If you can’t see the crack - what’s the big deal? Any crack gives bacteria a chance to enter the egg. For that reason, if I see anything that indicates the egg is cracked, it’s discarded. (Sometimes in the compost, sometimes in the garbage disposal, depending on my energy levels. If I break an egg while collecting, I toss it to the dogs, which they love.) 5. Sort the eggs. They will fall into one of three categories: sell, farmer grade (the pile o’ eggs in the basket), or discard. If an egg is too dirty, too small (at the end of the video you’ll also see me checking the weight on some of the eggs - I don’t sell any under 50 grams), or too … weird, it ends up in “farmer grade.” (I have one chicken who lays eggs that generally have small pieces of shell *inside* the egg due to how her reproductive tract operates. There’s another whose egg shells are very thin and won’t transport well. I keep the “problem” eggs for the consumption of my neighbors and me.) 6. Box up the eggs. 🥚

My great grandma had a local, small chicken farm. She used to give the eggs to neighbors. I was in charge of collecting the eggs. I was very small, but I remember they didn't like me removing their eggs. They got agitated. They didn't want me to touch THEIR eggs. And eventually, once they were of no use to her, she butchered them. All animals on farms are exploited, more or less. Don't let the businesses that profit from animals lie to you! If it's a business, the priority is always making more money. They do whatever they can to give us the illusion that their animals live in a wonderful world! Did you know that on all farms, small or large, all male chickens and male calves are k*lled because they don't produce eggs or milk? Meat, eggs, and dairy are virtually the same industries. If you are a vegetarian, this is your sign to go vegan. Normal chickens lay 10 to 15 eggs per year. But the animal industry has selectively bred these birds to lay almost an egg every day. Egg farmers have turned chickens into egg machines. This puts such extreme pressure on their bodies that most hens develop broken bones, organ failure, reproductive cancers, and prolapse before they're even two years old. Chickens are social and intelligent animals. But we've been conditioned to look at them as commodities and resources. We see our dogs and cats as individuals, and we respect them. We don't see them as resources for us. If you want animals to be treated "humanely," it's because you know they're someone, not something. They're individuals, not objects. So we shouldn't try to find a better way to exploit them. We should stop exploiting them completely and urgently. You can easily replace eggs in your diet. No need to pay for animal exploitation and slaughter. #egg #vegan #animals #vegetarian
