Hi, I’ve been asked what treatments I have myself, and I’m very open about it. I’m 60, and I’ve worked in aesthetic medicine for 18 years, so I have access to lots of products and devices and treatments. I’m very cautious, I’m sceptical. I want to see the evidence before I’ll consider something. You only get one face and body, so I’m very cautious. For me, there’s surgical and non surgical. The surgical procedure I’ve had about 10 years ago was an upper and lower blepharoplasty (under local anaesthetic) , and I went from looking tired to looking more bright eyed, and that made a real difference for me. I am consistent with my skincare. I cleanse and moisturise twice a day. I use an SPF every single day. I don’t lie out in the sun as I would burn quickly, and I cover up when it gets hot on holidays. I often look embarrassing, but I don’t care! 🥴 I use vitamin C serum on my skin in the morning, and I use vitamin A products at night. I’ll do regular SkinPen micro needling, which I love, I do light peels every couple of months, and I have things like dermal fillers, probably every two or three years, depending on whether I need a little bit. I’m very cautious, I can see I’m losing a bit of volume and dropping down a little bit, but I don’t want to look overdone or fake, so I will get a colleague to treat me every 2-3 years, and I’ll treat them. I’ve had some biostimulator injectables in my lower face, which I really like. I keep my anti wrinkle treatment subtle, and I will have some in the coming weeks on my lower face and neck. For me, it’s just careful, subtle, below the radar, do little things fairly frequently, and no big jobs, and just keep everything as natural and as safe as I can. Take care. We have complex changes that happen the lower face and mouth area over the years. Thankfully we have lots of treatment options! Our face ages on all levels; bone, fat, muscle and skin. These changes cause a loss of support around the mouth, thinning of the lips and development of fine lines and loss of skin elasticity. These changes are inevitable, even in non-smokers, but they’re definitely worse and happen quicker in people who smoke. Men are less affected as they have thicker beard skin which gives structure to the area. Prevention is important with daily SPF, vitamin A ( retinol) and vitamin C serums. For small lines, we might use Botulinum toxin along the lip border ( a lip flip) if medically suitable. Another option is to use a very delicate, runny hyaluronic acid injectable around and/or in the lip, which can help, without causing overfilling or the dreaded ‘trout pout’ look. SkinPen micro-needling is a favourite of mine to help reduce fine lines and build collagen. We can also use our Sciton laser to help reduce lines. I really like collagen stimulator injectables like Juläine too. We are always looking at the root cause of the changes and keeping our treatments as subtle and as safe as possible. Dr Eithne’s update 5 days after her split-face Botulinum toxin treatment, showing how the medicine works to reduce muscle activity in select areas. She had one side of her face, jawline and neck treated, and the other side was left untreated. This prescription-only medicine is used to temporarily reduce the action of the ‘depressor’ muscles that pull downwards, allowing more action of the ‘elevator’ ( lifting) muscles. The face is a complex system with layers of skin, fat, muscle, deep fat and bone, and by reducing the pull of certain muscles, there are fewer wrinkles in the overlying skin. We need all these components to allow us to make such a wide range of facial expressions, so we can communicate with one another. Typical results last 3-4 months and you need to see a doctor or dentist in Ireland to assess you for suitability. Eithne will wait until day 14, when she has the full results, and then she’ll balance with treatment on the other side. #dreithnebrenneraestheticmedicine #dreithnebrenner #antiwrinkleinjections #aestheticcmedicine #dublin

I had a great comment in response to my video yesterday about my lip flip treatment: “Why would you risk this treatment for every thing you mentioned to go wrong??” It’s a great question; all treatments carry risks and it’s so important to discuss the risks and benefits for each person considering a treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical. We see lots of glossy and filtered before and after images that can give unrealistic expectations and often we don’t hear of the risks, downtime, bruising or potential complications. I like to show these, to be realistic and honest. Some people get no downtime or bruising or redness, but others do, and we can guide you on potential downtime. If someone is bothered by skin ageing or sun damage, there are lots of options available, and you can discuss the risks and benefits during a detailed consultation with a medical professional, gathering information and then make a decision if it’s right for you. Not everyone is interested in treatments and that’s fine; our priority is always our medical health, and these are optional choices. You can minimise the risks by seeking a very experienced medical professional and going for subtle treatments, over a planned timescale. Less is more in my opinion and there should never be any urgency or pressure to have treatment. #aestheticmedicine #dreithnebrenner #dublin #safetyinbeauty #skinpen #sciton #dermalfiller #wrinklerelaxers #profhilo #polynucleotides #prp #skinrejuvenation #julaine #obagi #skinceuticals #reformskincare #harmonyca #sunekos

Are you wearing your SPF every day? In this video Dr Brenner talks about the areas that need particular attention when applying your SPF. It can be easy to miss a spot when applying your sunscreen, try and make sure you are covering every inch of your face to get the best protection you can! #dreithnebrenner #dreithnebrenneraestheticmedicine #SPF #sunprotection #skincare #aestheticmedicine #dublin

If you have regular antiwrinkle or botulinum toxin treatment and you let it wear off is anything bad going to happen? No, it’s fine. You can stop treatment at any point and your results will wear off and your muscles will recover their function and bring you back to the baseline where you started. I’m 60 and I’ve had a regular treatment for 20 years. Over the summer I decided to let my treatment wear off completely and see what my baseline muscle activity was. I was quite surprised 🙄 I had a very obvious resting B face because there’s background activity or ‘tension’ in the face muscles even when our face is resting. As we get older there’s more activity in the depressor or pulling down muscles especially in the lower face and neck and you can see how active my neck muscles were. Think Deirdre Barlow from Coronation Street ( if you’re my generation 🤦♀️). I had a subtle treatment; my goal is to soften expression lines and not get rid of them completely. I want to look fresher but not frozen. *There is different lighting in the videos and I have makeup on this evening, but you can see the softening of lines. In Ireland you must see a medical doctor or a dentist for a face-to-face consultation to assess you for suitability. Always stay as safe as possible by seeing registered and experienced medical professionals. #aestheticmedicine #dreithnebrenner #wrinklereduction #skincare #spf #restingbitchface #dublin

What’s blepharoplasty and why did I have this surgery 10 years ago? Blepharoplasty is surgery to the upper and/or lower eyelids to improve how they work or how they look. The eyelid skin is very thin and delicate and over many years it tends to lose elasticity and can hang down over the eyes causing problems with peripheral vision or tiredness or a heavy sensation. On the lower eyelids we can get eyebags from the fat that cushions the eyeballs pushing forward. If they cause problems, blepharoplasty can be done under local or general anaesthetic. The results can last a decade or more, and for some people, the results are great for their entire lifetime. I had hooded upper eyelids just like my dad, and they felt heavy and make me look really tired. I also had some poorly done tear trough filler from a colleague and it overstretched my skin. By the time I had it dissolved I was left with empty bags called festoons. The blepharoplasty was life-changing for me. Recovery was pain free and easy for me, with some bruising and swelling. All procedures carry risks, so you need a very experienced surgeon. In this photo I was also perimenopausal, out of shape and in an unhappy relationship, so I felt lousy about myself. I’m happy as a lark now 😁 thanks to friends, supportive GP, HRT, exercise and counselling- it took a village 😅 If you are contemplating blepharoplasty, seek word of mouth recommendations, do your research and see a skilled medical doctor for treatment.
