Charcoal tips and tricks! ⬇️ Charcoal is one of the most fun mediums to draw with, once you get the hang of it. So here’s a quick video showing how I like to draw with it. Me personally I always like to do the initial sketch with graphite, just because I don’t want the paper to get too messy right away. A lot of artists just jump in with charcoal right away, but I myself prefer to do it this way. And if you’ve noticed I don’t use charcoal for every drawing; I prefer to save it for drawings where the references aren’t too clear or there isn’t a great amount of detail. You get more of the essence of the person/image without all that unnecessary detail, like in this drawing. “Charcoal is so messy and it smudges so much!” Yes! And that’s why it’s so much fun to use. Because it is messy and because it does smudge. You get to use that as part of the process, and I feel with charcoal you’re not trying to create a “clean” drawing, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.
