Simply start out with 16th notes all on the RIGHT HAND and after every bar, change one of the RIGHTS into a LEFT. Keep this up until you are playing all LEFT HAND and then do the same in reverse. This exercise will also help develop hand and wrist strength, particularly in your non-dominant hand. ▶️ As always, when you are learning something new, remember to keep the TEMPO down until you are comfortable at the speed you are at. Fingers play such a huge role in supporting your control and speed with the sticks. Make sure your practice pad sessions feel smooth and effortless. If it’s clunky, you’re doing something wrong. Leveraging the rebound will ensure you’re not overworking when trying to build your hand technique foundation. - start this exercise at around 90bpm (need momentum to dribble the stick) - increase by 2bpm when you can play for 2 mins straight with no mistakes - make sure you’re not flamming notes on the unison strokes - patience is key! Do not force this movement. - have fun! Build hand speed on the drum set with this exercise. It involves finger technique.

Ever wonder why there are so many different drum pads out there? Different pads accomplish different things! They feel different, have different features, and can help you develop different skills. That said, one thing we tend to gloss over when we talk about what makes a pad unique or different is how they sound. It seems silly at a glance to worry about how your pad sounds, but at the end of the day, there's a good chance your practice pad is where you will spend the most time drumming - in other words, making music! Having a pad that sounds the way you want it do is more important than it seems. A practice pad isn't just to help you play faster rudiments, it's there to help you develop your musicianship when you're away from a drum. Of course, we've never seen one that can perfectly meet the expressive potential of playing on a drum, but that doesn't mean you should just ignore how your pad sounds altogether. It's okay to want your drum pad to have a "good" sound (or, a sound that you feel allows you to practice music, not just chops). It's okay to want a sound that gives you feedback on your playing, and that helps you understand whether what you're hearing will transfer to another instrument. That's what this video is for: it's just a quick demo to help you hear the differences between a few common materials used to manufacture practice pads.
