Why am I Van Gogh’ing this cat’s ear??😱😳 This procedure is called ear “notching” or “tipping”, and it’s performed on feral cats. “TNR” refers to Trap-Neuter (or spay)- Release. Feral cats who are not spayed/neutered multiple QUICKLY, leading to severe overpopulation concerns, which is why many veterinary clinics & rescue organizations dedicate time to this process. This particular kitty was finally trapped after having FIVE litters of kittens outside! By notching a feral cat’s ear before releasing it back into its colony, it clearly indicates that the cat is already spayed/neutered. This allows those who are doing TNR work to focus their efforts on the cats that still need to be sterilized rather than accidentally trapping already-altered cats. **SIDE NOTE: Although SOME feral cats can adjust to life indoors, many adolescent & adults cats who have spent the majority of their lives outside do not adjust well to a transition indoors. This particular lady was trapped by a family who attempted to keep her as a pet. Once they saw how desperately she wanted to be back outside & how feral/aggressive/fearful she was acting when in the house, they knew it was time to spay her & get her back out to where she wanted to be. Ear pulling treatments seem to be in vogue on social media. If you want to have your ear tugged on that’s fine. But if someone is selling their treatment as being able to fix neurological conditions that it can’t plausibly address, that’s misleading. Healthcare practitioners clearly should not be misleading and deceiving those that trust them with their health. Its a slippery slope to subluxation theory 🤯 🤪

They say don’t stick a q-tip in your ear, but a lot of us rebellious reckless types do it 😈 why does it feel so good?! 👂🏻The inside of your ear, the concha - the big inner bowl/shell part, is 100% vagal fiber💯. It’s stimulating a branch of the vagus nerve - which helps send relaxation to your brain and body! You DON’T need a q-tip for that, just use your finger👆🏻 When you massage that cartilage it stimulates a branch of the vagus nerve (the ABVN)… so this improves vagal tone. So try it out, put your index finger in that bowl/shell part of your ear, put your thumb on the back of your ear, and rub it out. 👆🏻👂🏻 This is based on Polyvagal theory which I have training in. The vagus nerve gets a ton of attention now, so much so that it’s almost become pop psychology. But it IS valuable to understand that it’s a piece of the pie for your overall well-being. Polyvagal theory teaches how to improve vagal tone, but recognizes the brain stem is a bigger player to pay attention to. It’s all connected; and part of recognizing the physiological is part of mental health.
