Honestly, it felt completely crazy, risky, and a little far-fetched when we started to think about it. 🤔 I just knew that I needed to be home with my young kids, and also that none of the preschools I toured for them felt right. I just knew I could create something that would allow kids to learn through play. Gemma and I used to go for a stroller walk every afternoon when I got home from school. During one of these walks, I shared my hair-brained idea with her. To my shock, she said, “I’ll quit my nannying job and do it with you.” 🙈 And the rest is history. Turns out it was one of the best ideas I’ve ever had. (Also, shout out to my husband, who went along with the plan in part because I promised that when our kids started kindergarten, I would go back to my stable public school job with benefits. I was 23 years old when I opened my first center, my daughter was 9 years old and all we had was each other. She was my motivation but I never imagined 17 years later this would be her story. As a mom I can finally pat myself on the back and say job well done, not because she opened a childcare center, but because I know that her life is about to change now in so many great ways, and her children will also follow in her footsteps one day, even if not in childcare they will witness their mom working hard and making impact in the world.
