This performance of “Echoes” was filmed at Abbey Road Studios in August 2006 during David Gilmour’s On an Island era, and it ended up becoming one of the last great filmed versions of the song with Richard Wright, who passed away two years later in 2008. “Echoes” had always been one of Pink Floyd’s most demanding pieces. Originally released in 1971 on Meddle, the song ran over 23 minutes and depended on a strange, almost telepathic chemistry between Gilmour and Wright, especially during the long improvised middle section and the famous “ping” passage. Gilmour later said that chemistry could not simply be taught to another keyboard player. Even if somebody learned every chord, every synth patch and every note, they still would not sound like Rick. “There’s something that’s specifically so individual about the way that Rick and I play that, you can’t get someone to learn it and do it just like that. That’s not what music’s about.” That is why “Echoes” disappeared from his live shows after 2006. It was never just a song.
