“I would off-screen go, ‘Canada.’” 🇨🇦 At a Q&A for THE RUNNING MAN, Edgar Wright shared with the TIFF Lightbox audience a moment from the script that didn’t quite make it into the film, but he still couldn’t let go of. #RunningManMovie #edgarwright #glenpowell #canada #Toronto

Edgar Wright joined my “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” podcast to talk The Running Man and so much more. This is a montage of some fun filmmaking questions that @edgarwright answered. It’s still surreal to present my ticket stubs to films I saw over 20 years ago. I never would have thought that the filmmakers would be holding those stubs all these years later. 🎬 Fact: Hot Fuzz (2007) The scene featuring the unintelligible “Hedge Cutter” (played by David Bradley) is a nod to the diverse and often impenetrable regional dialects found in rural England. To heighten the comedy, director Edgar Wright used a “translation chain” where each officer translates the dialect into a slightly more “standard” British accent, yet the lead character, Sergeant Angel (Simon Pegg), still struggles to grasp the meaning. Interestingly, while David Bradley’s character sounds like he is speaking gibberish, he is actually speaking a thick West Country dialect. The joke was so popular that the crew used real locals as extras to ensure the background chatter felt authentic to the Somerset setting, making the film a beloved tribute to British police procedurals and rural life alike.

Edgar Wright has stated the movie was done in the style of a musical, but instead of the characters breaking into song and dance, they break into a fight. The battle between Scott Pilgrim and Matthew Patel is done in the style of a Bollywood fight scene.

Edgar Wright explains how this iconic Shaun of the Dead scene almost got cut. This is a clip from On Film…With Kevin McCarthy, make sure you check out his amazing channel where you can find the full interview with Wright! Wright recalls being told during production that the shot was “shoe leather” and likely destined for the edit bin, despite the time and precision poured into it. Rather than cutting it, he doubled down on the detail, shaping the scene so it had to earn its place in the film. He also talks through his editing process with Paul Machliss, including a simple but revealing test, watching scenes with the sound off to see what truly works visually. Released in 2004, Shaun of the Dead became a defining entry in modern British comedy, praised for its visual storytelling, rhythm, and inventive direction. The film helped cement Wright’s collaboration with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and is now widely regarded as one of the most influential genre comedies of its era. #shaunofthedead #edgarwright #filmmaking #editing #directing

😎 Baby Driver is a high-energy action film directed by Edgar Wright that blends fast-paced car chases with a carefully curated soundtrack. The story follows Baby, a young getaway driver who uses music to drown out his tinnitus and stay focused behind the wheel. Each heist is choreographed to the rhythm of the songs playing in his earbuds, giving the film a unique, almost musical quality. Baby’s quiet, reserved nature contrasts with the chaotic world of crime he’s trapped in, working under a controlling crime boss while longing for a way out. As the story unfolds, Baby meets Debora, a kind-hearted waitress who inspires him to imagine a life beyond crime. Their relationship adds emotional depth to the film, raising the stakes as Baby tries to escape his dangerous lifestyle. However, his past and the unpredictable behavior of his criminal partners make that escape increasingly difficult. With its stylish direction, sharp editing, and memorable performances, *Baby Driver* stands out as a fresh take on the heist genre, balancing adrenaline-fueled action with moments of genuine heart.

At the party where he talks to Ramona for the first time, Scott holds up a very badly drawn picture of Ramona and asks if anyone has seen her. Director Edgar Wright said Scott was originally supposed to hold up a picture of Ramona from the comic book series, but felt the silly drawing Scott holds up was more comedic. - 📽️: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World(2010) Dir. Edgar Wright

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World blends romance, comedy, and video-game logic into a story about emotional growth disguised as a chaotic adventure. Scott begins the film immature and avoidant, drifting through life while hiding from the consequences of past relationships. When Ramona Flowers enters his world, their connection sets off a surreal challenge: defeating her seven evil exes. Beneath the absurd premise, the story quietly asks whether Scott is ready to confront his own behavior rather than simply “win” someone’s affection. The film’s visual style mirrors Scott’s mindset. Battles explode into coins and points, everyday conversations feel like game levels, and emotional conflicts become literal boss fights. Director Edgar Wright turns heartbreak and insecurity into exaggerated action sequences, showing how overwhelming relationships can feel when someone hasn’t yet learned accountability. Scott isn’t just fighting Ramona’s past — he’s slowly realizing he must face his own. What makes the film memorable is how it reframes the idea of self-respect. Ramona is never simply a prize to be earned; she’s someone with her own complicated history and choices. Scott’s real victory arrives when he recognizes that growth requires honesty and responsibility. The film uses humor, music, and kinetic editing to tell a coming-of-age story where leveling up means understanding yourself, not defeating everyone else. #ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld #EdgarWright #ComicBookCinema #CultClassic #FilmAnalysis
