🎥 May the 4th Be With You! “Cantina Band” (aka Mad About Me) is John Williams’ iconic 1977 swing-jazz piece soundtrack to the Mos Eisley Cantina for Star Wars: A New Hope. Recorded with nine jazz musicians, it blends trumpet, saxophones, clarinet, Fender Rhodes piano, steel drum, and synthesizer bass into a futuristic take. The “Cantina Band” was crafted with a playful twist: George Lucas tasked John Williams to imagine how aliens would play 1930s swing music. Unlike the rest of the Star Wars score (performed by the London Symphony Orchestra), Cantina Band was recorded separately with a small nine-piece jazz ensemble. The track was included on the original soundtrack album and became one of the most beloved pieces of Star Wars music. A second tune, Cantina Band #2 (aka “If I Only Could Let Go And Cry”, was later released in the 1997 Special Edition. "The Modal Nodes" is the name of a fictional music group. The band plays in the city of Mos Eisley on the desert planet Tatooine , in the dimly lit basement bar, the Cantina, where the wise Obi-Wan Kenobi takes his young apprentice, Luke Skywalker . The bar is populated with aliens of all kinds, and in the background plays the band, whose real name is "The Modal Nodes," consisting of seven alien musicians. The band members all belong to the Bith species and come from the planet Clak'dor VII; they have large, white bald heads with large, black eyes and claw-like fingers. The band's frontman is Figrin D'an, nicknamed "Fiery." Fiery plays a Kloo-Horn, and his bandmates play a fanfare, an omnibox, and a Dorenian Beschniquel. Meet the toad bug! These bizarre, squatty bugs are truly some of the strangest and most alien looking insects around! Their perfectly camouflaged round bodies, capped with bulbous protruding eyes makes these insects look like they jumped straight from Mos Eisley Cantina! It should come as no surprise that these weirdos have an equally surprising survival strategy: they are voracious predators! Using quick jumps and a sharp piercing proboscis, these toad bugs can impale small invertebrates and slurp up their innards. Their compound eyes help to spot even the most camouflaged of prey, and their cryptic coloration allows them to stalk in close enough to make their kill. These insects hunt along primarily freshwater shorelines and can be quite abundant in the right habitat. This was my first time ever spotting one of these unusual insects and I was STOKED that I happened to spot this specimen as it made a poorly timed hop! Just goes to show what you could miss if you don’t take the time to slow down out in nature!
