don’t take the wrong trail though, Google lies! 😳 📍Tunnel Vista Falls, in between Cloudcroft and Alamogordo, New Mexico ⚠️ Warning: Do NOT just Google this waterfall and start walking! Read my directions, here and in Saved highlight “Tunnel Vista Falls.” If you start scrambling down the side of the canyon you could get in a sketchy spot. 🚫 Ignore the trails that start by the parking area. Sure, people have used them, but they’re super steep and you’ll probably end up scooching down on your butt regretting your life choices. ⚠️Instead, head towards the tunnel and look for the “Lights on” sign. To the left, you’ll see a big black pipe. Look for the red arrow on the rock near the pipe. That’s where you start hiking! ➡️ From here, it’s a slow descent into the canyon. Stick to the right side of the canyon wall pretty much all the way to the falls. There are a couple places that go down to the left, but they are steeper and sketchier! When in doubt, stay right. :) 🥾 Wear grippy shoes and bring poles for extra stability, if you like! There’s an optional stream crossing to the falls and the rocks can be slippery. 🏊♂️ The pool was deep enough for 6’ guys to dive in when we visited, but double check the water levels before you jump! ☀️ The trail is mostly shaded in the morning, but gets hot (and busy!!!) later in the day. For best chance of the pool to yourself, go in the early morning! 🗑️ Pack out what you pack in!! Bonus: bring a trash bag to pack out the gross/rude people’s trash. 🙄 We saw too many bottles and cans!! 🍻 After the hike, I highly recommend a drink from @cloudcroftbrewing (loved the blueberry cider!!) and/or a sandwich from @cloudcroft.sandwich.shop (the turkey panini with green chile relish & bacon!) 😋 🏕️ We stayed at the beautiful @el_campo_glamping just 10 minutes from this hike! 😍 It was the perfect mix of nature and convenience, with incredible views above Alamogordo and White Sands! (Full video on our stay coming soon!)

The Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin wilderness area in northwest New Mexico is out of this world! 🌘 Here’s some things to know when planning your visit: 📵 This area is REMOTE! A lot of bumpy dirt roads, limited or no cell service, no close by groceries or services, no water sources, etc. You should be prepared ahead of time with downloaded maps, groceries, water, and a game plan of where you’ll be hiking and camping. 🏜️The Bisti Badlands are located on BLM land but there is private Navajo land within its boundaries, which means you should be aware of where you are when visiting. Be respectful of private land owners. ⛺️ Camp in BLM areas only. There’s some primitive “trailheads” you can car camp or tent camp at, I used the iOverlander app to find our spots. Please note that campfires are prohibited. 🗺️ The remoteness of Bisti Badlands means few official trails. You’ll need offline maps to help you navigate the social trails or cross country travel. You can use AllTrails or I like to use Gaia GPS, it was super helpful for finding landmarks in this area. ♻️ Practicing Leave No Trace is crucial in this remote area. Pack out everything you packed in, don’t collect fossils or petrified wood, don’t climb on the geological features, don’t leave behind toilet paper or human waste, etc. ☀️ Be aware of the weather and temperatures before visiting. It can be super cold in the winter and extremely hot in summer with little to no shade. I would avoid summer altogether and visit in spring or fall. The area gets very little rain but be aware because you could get stuck fast out on those dirt roads! 🚙 I highly recommend combining Bisti Badlands with a visit to Chaco Culture National Historic Park since they are close together and if you make the effort to drive to one, you’d be missing out to not visit the other. Save this post for future planning. Happy hiking in the Land of Enchantment!
