Rise and shine, the elephant way! In our last post, we touched upon Natibu’s feisty personality. Here it is, fully on display. This was taken two years ago — Natibu has long since graduated from his baby stable — but he still smiles upon a new day. Given Natibu’s rescue story, this was quite a poignant scene: In March 2023, when he was just a small baby, he was found submerged and stuck inside a manhole. He arrived at our Kaluku Unit deeply traumatised, especially in any sort of confined space. Even his stable, which most orphans see as a safe space, seemed to give him echoes of the manhole. The Keepers patiently earned his trust, showing him that he was loved and in good hands. Thus, to see him so comfortable inside his bedroom — and quite cheeky to boot — was a triumph indeed. Natibu has already come so far, but his journey with us is just beginning. Waking up in a bamboo hut surrounded by happy elephants is definitely one of them 🐘 We were really hesitant about visiting an elephant sanctuary as we didn’t want to support something bad for the animals or that had a zoo feel. We did a lot of research and Chai Lai Orchid was the complete opposite. The animals just genuinely seemed like they were having such a good time. There was even some babies born on site that were super attached to the guides and played around, it was so cute. This place takes the majority of their profits and reinvests in the local community. They have a strong focus on educating and employing girls as well as providing for refugees from Myanmar. Some of the elephants were rescued from circuses in Thailand, unethical “sanctuaries”, poaching and zoos. Ideally we shouldn’t need animal sanctuaries but in the real world, this is about as good as it gets. There are barely any wild elephants left in Thailand and it is so nice to know that the ones that were abused in the past have safe places to go too. In this video I was on my way to the airport when I came across this herd of Elephants. They were swiftly walking across the road, I take it that something had frightened them in the bush before I had gotten there and seen them. Often animals will give us signs to back off or establish comfort zones, it’s important that we pay attention to those signs and respect them. When it comes to Elephants, these beautiful, sentient animals that have the ability to feel strong emotions, and care deeply for the members of their herd. Watching this unfold was one of the most powerful wildlife moments I’ve experienced. This herd of elephants had moved with clear purpose to the final resting place of Kegol, a well-known tusker who once dominated this landscape in the Mara North Conservancy around @alexwalkerserian What followed was extraordinary. Members of the herd gently picked up fragments of Kegol’s bones, lifting them with their trunks, carrying them briefly, touching and smelling them before setting them down again. Elephants are known to revisit the remains of deceased individuals, particularly those they were familiar with. This behaviour is widely understood as a form of recognition and remembrance - a response to death that reflects their deep social bonds, long memories, and emotional intelligence. Standing there, it was impossible not to feel the weight of the moment. This wasn’t curiosity. It felt deliberate. Respectful.
