Thought about trying enamel but not sure where to begin? 🤔 When you think of enamel, a lot of people think of expensive kilns, however enamel can be fired with your torch too. In this example we show the 3 stages of firing using a piece of 24 gauge copper and Thompson’s Opaque Sea Foam Green. A full firing for a piece this size can be done in under 2 minutes! Stage 1: Wet Sugar 💦 When the enamel begins to melt, it resembles wet sugar. This stage is often called the Crystallisation or Granular stage too. Stage 2: Orange Peel 🍊 Simply put, the enamel resembles the skin of an orange! It will become glossy but bumpy across the surface. Stage 3: Full Fuse 🔥 When the enamel is fully melted and adhered to your metal, the surface will be smooth and shiny. There is a 4th stage - overfired. Generally you’ll want to avoid this as the metal begins to pull away from the edges of your piece as it overheats. Macro speed-through of the process of putting the final touch paint layers on an almost-finished painted enamel copper cabochons. This ancient technique of painting in glass using oxides is known as ‘painting on enamel’ and a few other names. Alongside cloisonné, also an enamelling technique, I use this to create mostly little face cabochons on copper which I then use as manmade gemstones in my jewelry work. Can’t wait to show you what I have planned for this big face I thing you will like her 🫶 . Champlevé is a traditional enamelling technique where small cells are carved out of a solid piece of metal after which they are individually filled with enamel glass. Here is a small sequence of the enamelling process of the honeycomb dial. Here, each cell has been carefully engraved in a sunburst pattern and now it is time to pack in the enamel. The kids are back to school after a period of home educating since February, and I am in full swing of completing enamelling orders that I have received over the last couple of weeks while I was on holiday in Lanzarote ☀️ I’m also planning to head to my @swmakers shop today to sand the door in preparation for repainting! 💛 Last week I found some time to enamel on these gorgeous jellyfish cut outs! I’m trying to decide whether they are finished or need another thin layer of the mint enamel, which when applied sparingly burns out to a lovely transparent shade. It’s the start of a new school year and Andy and I are running the enamelling and jewellery-making club at @ashvilleharrogate for a second year. Five (maybe?) newcomers are joining five repeat customers. My plan for the experienced enamellers is to introduce transparents, texturing and forming, and using oxides, perfect for impatient teenagers who like to smash things.
