Is your country’s humour distinctive? In this interview, pride isn’t pinned to history, politics, or global influence—but to something quieter. Less obvious. More instinctive. For this interviewee, Englishness is a feeling. A way of seeing the world. It’s something she finds hard to describe, harder still to translate—one she feels is reflected in the idiosyncrasies and subtleties of English humour: something instantly recognisable to those who’ve lived in the UK over time, often murky (at best) for those who haven’t. It left us wondering: how much of what makes us proud of the places we come from—that make us feel we belong—is about shared understandings at the margins: the subtle codes, the unspoken jokes, the feeling of ‘getting it’? Can self-identity and cultural pride be rooted in things as subtle as the way people carry themselves, speak, or the things they find humorous? And if it can: what happens when those marginal differences start to shift into line with more global norms? What is gained? And what—if anything—is lost? Englishness is in our hearts, not skin 🫀 Here we go again, the tired old trope peddled by the same few unimaginative characters that London is not English anymore. What a nonsensical statement 🤯 London expresses the diversity of British culture in such wonderful ways, and that is what makes our capital city so special ✨ Suggesting that the colour of a cities people dictates it's level of Englishness is not only ignorant but extremely harmful.
