1. “I think it’s just stress.” The moment those words leave your mouth, you’ve handed your doctor an easy diagnosis. Stress becomes the diagnosis, and the real cause of your symptoms may never get investigated. Let the doctor rule that out, don’t do it for them. 2. “I don’t know how to explain it, I just don’t feel well.” It can be hard sometimes to explain how you feel but vague language invites vague medicine. When you can’t explain or describe it, it’s too easy for a clinician to minimize it. Write down your symptoms before your appointment. When it started. What makes it worse. Is there pain. Make them specific, even if they’re strange. 3. “It’s probably nothing.” If it were nothing, you wouldn’t be sitting in that office. This phrase signals to a clinician that you don’t take your own symptoms seriously and some will follow your lead. You don’t have to be dramatic, but you do have to advocate for your very real symptoms. 4. “I’ve already Googled it.” This one can work against you but I personally try to make it a positive thing. Telling your doctor you Googled can make them defensive and dismissive. Bring your research but frame it as questions and not like you don’t trust what they say. 5. “I don’t want to waste your time.” This phrase is heartbreaking to me, because I hear it from patients who have been dismissed before. You are not wasting anyone’s time. But when you say this, you’re giving permission to be rushed, to be overlooked, and to leave without real answers. Your symptoms deserve a full appointment. I always say, it’s better to have something checked than wish you had. I want to help you be empowered to advocate for yourself. #ENT #ORL #medicaleducation #healthandwellness #drnhagenimana

Med school’s biggest bottleneck 🎓 These are the 2025 residency match rates for some competitive specialties: • Dermatology — 52.8% • Plastic Surgery — 55.8% • Neurosurgery — 56.3% • Orthopedic Surgery — 58.4% • Vascular Surgery — 59.3% • Anesthesia — 59.8% • Radiology — 60.1% • ENT — 71.4% Meanwhile… Thousands of residency spots in core specialties went unfilled: • Family Medicine — 805 positions • Internal Medicine — 357 positions • Pediatrics — 147 positions So what’s going on? Here are a few structural problems with the match: • Step 1 is now pass/fail, making objective comparison harder and increasing reliance on prestige, connections, and subjective metrics. • Application inflation — students apply to dozens or even hundreds of programs, creating massive review burdens and higher costs. • Programs get flooded with applications (think 500 applicants for 4 derm spots). • Match Day happens in mid-March, giving little time to plan a cross-country move before July. • No negotiation — you match to one program and that’s it. The result: massive competition in some fields while others struggle to fill positions. The system clearly needs reform. What changes would actually fix it? 👇 Curious what you think!

They speak slowly and never rush — because time doesn’t flow the same way for them. What begins as a simple conversation reveals the wisdom of the Ents and their deep connection with nature.
