I’ve been the rider who’s fallen and gotten back on. The rider who’s had a confidence knock and had to take a few steps back to find it again. And I’ve learned a few things along the way. Here’s the advice I’d give you if I wasn’t worried about hurting your feelings: 1️⃣ Your horse doesn’t need a stronger bit. Your horse needs clearer communication. Holly can be strong on the flat. I’ve definitely thought about changing bits. But my coach reminded me something that stuck: If she doesn’t fully understand me yet, adding more hardware won’t fix that. So right now we’re fixing the conversation first. Clearer aids. More consistency. Better timing. Will we ever change bits? Maybe. But I want the solution to be skill before it’s equipment. 2️⃣ Being brave isn’t the same thing as being prepared. Someone once told my mom the other day, “Hazel is really brave.” And yes… I am. But bravery without preparation is just luck. When I feel confident going into a line, it’s not because I’m fearless. It’s because I know my horse. I know my pace. I know my plan. That’s not reckless. That’s prepared. 3️⃣ Stop setting goals based on ribbons. When I first started riding, I thought it was all about that $2 ribbon. Now? I care more about setting small goals and celebrating the wins. Because small wins build big rounds. And celebrating progress makes the whole journey a lot more fun. Because here’s the truth: If you only celebrate perfect, you’re going to feel behind most of the time. Progress is quieter but way more powerful. I’m going to be real: Social media in the equestrian world isn’t all fun and games. When I started Warmbloods + Wine 7 years ago, I was building something positive — I just didn’t know what. 🐴 This sport can be brutal. There are always SO many people judging, mean comments about riding abilities or people who have an opinion about literally everything. And guess what? I wouldn’t want to trade lives with any of them. 👀 Keep going. Do it for yourself. Don’t be afraid to fail. You never know what your hard work and dreams can equate to. Live a life you’re proud of, put yourself out there, quietly get to work in the background — and everything else will follow. ♥️ I promise you, you’ll be thankful.
