¿Cómo sobrevivió una civilización siglos en el desierto sin una sola gota de lluvia? Los nazca en Perú tenían un problema: no llovía y el agua estaba a kilómetros bajo tierra. Construyeron acueductos subterráneos llamados puquios excavando hasta 15 metros de profundidad para conectar los acuíferos sin que el agua se evaporara. Para subirla usaron una forma de espiral con agujeros llamados ojos que atrapaban el viento y lo empujaban hacia abajo. La presión del aire conseguía empujar el agua hacia arriba. These ancient figures in Peru are some of the most well-conserved geoglyphs ever found. They’re estimated to have been created between 500 BC and 500 AD and some of the figures are up to 300 meters in size. They’re so well-preserved due to their climate of little rain and the large sand hills that surround them, sheltering them from strong winds. #Peru

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting the ancient Nazca lines in Peru. The Lines are geoglyphs meaning they are large designs produced on the ground using elements of the earth. There’s still no clear understanding as to why the lines were made but I was blown away by their grandeur and intricacy that could only be appreciated by prop airplane. There are a lot of hypotheses as to the Line’s purpose; my favorite theory is that the Lines had a spiritual purpose for the Nazca people and were meant to be seen by deities in the sky. It’s still a mystery at this moment but it’s humbling to think about what we as a species can achieve when we collectively decide to work together to create something.
