You CAN grow what you want… I have always LOVED Rhododendron and dreamt of having one in my garden but I never had the right soil! Did you know that you can create the perfect soil for your acid loving plants by adding the right compost. You might have heard of or seen Ericaceous compost but not really known what it is! Well it’s the magic ingredient for acid loving plants. When I added my Rhododendron to the garden we dug a big hole, filled it with ericaceous compost and then annually I mulch it with it as well! I have researched that if you’re wanting to change the colour of a hydrangea from pink to blue then adding the compost will help with that too 🙌🏼. @growmoorbettergrowing kindly gifted me this one to try for its annual mulch! What is this magic? Did you know that blue hydrangeas require a soil acidity of 6.5 or below to turn and remain blue? Hydrangeas like ericaceous compost, which is naturally acidic. If you didn’t have any like me when planting your hydrangea, you can use this cheats method from @vitaxgarden. It turned my pink hydrangea blue in just a couple of weeks! I have also heard that adding some grounds to the soil can also do the trick. Cornus alternifolia Argentea is really great alternative to the highly prised Cornus Kousa, or Wedding Cake Tree which prefers an ericaceous/ acid pH soil. This Cornus, which is more versatile, has branches which have an upturned habit at the ends, and give the appearance of a pagoda roof along with the lovely tiered structure, and the variegation on the leaf makes it quite an impressive specimen plant in a small garden. Left to grow, slowly over time it will form these lovely tiers, and that’s why it’s called the Pagoda Cornus. The topic of potting soil may not seem so exciting, but it matters greatly when it comes to the health of your plants. Soil in pots needs to be able to provide a grip for roots but also be light enough to allow air and water to the roots. Mixing Garden Soil, Cocopeat, Vermicompost, Neem Powder and Sand can be a way to find the right mix. This loose and porous mixture not only makes the containers lighter to move, but transports water, fertilizer, and air to plant roots more quickly, allowing good drainage, which is important for the growth of your Leafy Greens.
