Everything To Everyone by Everclear (Recovery 1998) • Lead singer Art Alexakis says, "It's kind of an angry song. That person is within everybody, I think everybody has this ability to try and be everything to everyone, to try to please. I think there are 2 aspects of it - there's the pleaser, who doesn't always show his true self, always plays nice and as time goes on shows more and more of himself, but there's also the people who are everything to everyone who are manipulators and users." • #rockofthe90s #90s #90srock #90smusic #artalexakis #everclear #rockmusic • Video Source: https://youtu.be/sW1DH936bqg?feature=shared

Pixies Paving the Way for ’90s Alt Rock

“Where Is My Mind?”

Pixies Paving the Way for ’90s Alt Rock “Where Is My Mind?” – Pixies (1988, Live on Fa. Onrust, Netherlands) Man, early 1988, Pixies had just unleashed Surfer Rosa—that raw, game-changing album that snuck into underground ears and set the stage for the whole ’90s alternative explosion. Barely known beyond college radio die-hards, they were grinding through Europe, scoring this killer TV spot on Dutch show Fa. Onrust only months after dropping the record. This clip nails them in their prime: Pre-Doolittle hype, still honing that wild live edge. Joey Santiago’s sparse, killer guitar lines, Kim Deal’s rock-solid bass groove, and David Lovering’s tight beats give Black Francis (aka Frank Black) room to unleash those insane loud-quiet-loud blasts. “Where Is My Mind?”—cut with Steve Albini in March ‘88—wasn’t pushed as a single, but its weird, dreamy vibe and twisted lyrics made it a staple in their sets, pulling you in like a fever dream. Fun fact: The song’s eerie underwater feel came from Black Francis drawing on his scuba diving trips—surreal imagery that hit big later, sampled in Fight Club’s end credits and covered by everyone from Placebo to Nada Surf. For newbies, Pixies were the blueprint for grunge and alt rock: Their mix of punk energy, bizarre storytelling, and zero-frills production inspired Nirvana (Kurt called them his fave) and Radiohead to smash genres wide open. Insight: Even before the grunge boom, gigs like this showed how Pixies flipped the script on rock—minimalist yet massive, influencing a generation without chasing the spotlight. No memorial needed here, but shoutout to the band’s enduring legacy, still touring and dropping fire. By 2000, Everclear had ridden the alt-rock wave to success given the popularity of their first two record releases. And there was more inspiration to come, albeit a bit sad. Lead singer, Art Alexakis, in reflection of his own life post-divorce wrote this song, ‘Wonderful’. Layne Staley wasn’t okay here—and you can feel it “Sludge Factory” – Alice In Chains (1996, MTV Unplugged) When Alice In Chains got back on stage for their acoustic debut in April 1996 after a 2 year break of silence, they weren’t simply translating old songs—they were confronting a deeper reckoning. “Sludge Factory,” a track BORN from the band’s frustration with label pressure and creative tension had landed in that set not as filler but as a statement. Originally this track appeared on Alice in Chains (1995) self titled album and the song was dense, abstract, and emotionally charged to say the very least. An acoustically driven version only compounded the weight! The performance didn’t go smoothly. “Sludge Factory” had to be restarted several times—Layne Staley missed cues, the band looked uneasy. But they pushed through. What made the final cut isn’t perfection and it’s a moment of visible effort. Staley’s voice, weathered but intact, fought through the imperfections. Cantrell anchored the track with heavy melody and subdued control. The tension didn’t break the performance and that defined it. The song’s title—a stab at the music industry and more personally at their record label—felt literal by this point. Alice In Chains was barely holding together, and this was one of their last major performances with Staley. Watching it now, it plays like a band trying to steady itself in real time. The flaws are what made this perfomance so legendary. 📷 - @rocklyricedits — #AliceInChains #SludgeFactory #MTVUnplugged #90sRock #Grunge #LayneStaley #JerryCantrell #LiveMusic #MusicHistory #UnpluggedSet #1996Live #AlternativeRock #SeattleSound #PostGrunge
