exceptionnel et rare … plus que quelques heures pour voir cette fleur géante au jardin des plantes #paris Amorphophallus titanum ou « Arum titan » L’Arum titan est une plante extraordinaire originaire des forêts tropicales humides de Sumatra en Indonésie. Il est remarquable par la taille démesurée de son inflorescence et son odeur nauséabonde lorsqu'il fleurit. Il croit lentement et met plusieurs années pour atteindre la maturité. Il pousse à partir d'un tubercule (ou corme) souterrain, qui stocke les nutriments nécessaires à sa croissance. Après la germination des graines, la plante développe chaque année une seule grande feuille et son tubercule souterrain grossit. La feuille atteint la taille d’un petit arbre. Le pétiole se divise en trois et la feuille est composée de nombreuses folioles. La feuille peut atteindre plusieurs m de haut et d’envergure. Chaque année, la vieille feuille meurt et une nouvelle la remplace. Il faut une dizaine d’années au tubercule, qui a emmagasiné assez d’énergie et atteint alors au moins une dizaine de kilogrammes pour émettre sa fleur phénoménale. L'inflorescence (un grand spadice portant les fleurs -mâles au-dessus, femelles en dessous- entouré d'une gigantesque bractée en forme de coupe, la spathe) de l'Arum titan est une des plus grandes au monde ... la hauteur de son spadice dépasse généralement 1,50 m et peut atteindre 3,5 m dans la nature ... Les fleurs femelles s’ouvrent en premier, suivies à un ou deux jours d’intervalle par les fleurs mâles, cette caractéristique évitant l’auto-fécondation. La floraison proprement dite est brève (72 heures), et pendant celle-ci, la température de la fleur augmente considérablement favorisant l’émission de son « parfum » : la fleur cadavre (sapromyophile) de l’Arum titan exhale une odeur pestilentielle (mélange de cadavre en décomposition et de poisson pourri) attirant un gros coléoptère du genre Diamesus qui le pollinise.
